Lavigne’s first television appearance was during the year 2002 during an episode of Sabrina, the Teenage Witch. In 2004 she made a cameo in the film Going the Distance. As the years went on, Lavigne moved into feature film acting by taking small roles to begin with. In November 2005, Lavigne traveled to New Mexico to film a scene in the film The Flock. She played Beatrice Bell, who was the girlfriend of a guy who is the prime crime suspect. This film was not considered Lavigne’s debut because it was not released in American theaters. The film made $7 million dollars.

In December 2005, Lavigne appeared in Fast Food Nation, which was based on the book titled Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal. The film is a fictionalized adaptation which traces how fast food is made. Lavigne starred as a high school student who was determined to free the cows that were being slaughtered. The film opened on November 17, 2006 and grossed $2 million dollars worldwide.

In 2006, Lavigne’s feature film debut was in the film Over the Hedge, where she voiced an animated character. The film was based on a comic strip with the same name. She was the voice of Heather, a Virginia Opossum. Lavigne believes she was picked for the part because of how popular she had become in the music world. The film opened May 19, 2006 and made $38 million opening weekend. It grossed $336 million worldwide.

_______________

Lavigne's opinion on making the movie Over the Hedge..
"
All the actors went in individually [to the sound booth], and [director] Tim and [screenwriter Karey] and directors were there with me every time I went in, and they made it go so smoothly; they made me feel comfortable.... That was the interesting part, going in by yourself, with no one else to kind of feed off of." -Avril Lavigne
