    In November 2002, at the age of 17, Avril Lavigne had a 15 minute audition with Ken Krongard, an A&R rep, who invited L.A. Reid, who at the time was the head of Arista Records. Reid was so impressed that he signed her to Arista Records with a contract deal worth $1.25 million for two albums and a $900,000 publishing advance. As a result, Avril dropped out of high school to pursue her dreams.

 

    On June 4, 2002 Lavigne released her debut album entitled Let Go. Her first record reached the #2 spot on the Billboard 200 and reached the #1 spot in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom. As a result of this success, Lavigne became the youngest female soloist to have the #1 album in the United Kingdom. By December 2002, the album was certified four-times platinum. Let Go had over 1 million copies sold in Canada, that it received a diamond certification. As of 2009, Let Go has sold over 16 million copies worldwide and the RIAA certified the album six- times platinum.
    Lavigne's lead single off the album was "Complicated," which reached #1 in Australia and #2 in the United States. In Canada, "Complicated" was one of the best selling singles during that year. In addition, this song was featured on the show Dawson's Creek. Later, the first single was #83 on the Hot 100 Singles of the Decade. Other singles off the album included "Sk8ter Boi" and "I'm With You."

 

    Lavigne's second album was released on May 25, 2005 and entitled Under My Skin. The album was #1 in many countries, some of these included, Australia, Canada, Mexico. Japan and the United Kingdom. In addition, it sold more than 10 million copies. Lavigne wrote many of the album's songs on her own, however, she got some help from Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida. To promote the album, Lavigne, went on the "Live and By Surprise" mall tour. By December 2004, Lavigne went on her first world tour, the Bonez Tour, which lasted until the end of 2005.
    The first single off the album was "Don't Tell Me." The song became #1 in Argentina and Mexico, along with top five in the United Kingdom and Canada and top ten in Australia and Brazil. The lead single off the album was "My Happy Ending." It became #1 in Mexico. Other singles off the album included, "Nobody's Home" and "He Wasn't."

 

    On April 17, 2007, Lavigne released her third album, The Best Damn Thing. After the release of her third album, she immediately started promoting it with a mini tour. "Girlfriend," the lead single off the album, was on top of the Billboard Hot 100, while during the same week, the album was #1 on the Billboard 200 chart. The lead single became #1 in multiple countries like, Canada, Japan and Italy. In addition, Girlfriend was recorded in multiple languages including French, Italian, Spanish and German. Other singles off the album were "When You're Gone" and "Hot." The Best Damn Thing ended up selling out 5 million copies worldwide. In March 2008, Lavigne went on a world tour called The Best Damn Tour which lasted over a year.

 

   

    Since November 2008, Lavigne has been writing her fourth studio album, Goodbye Lullaby. By July 2009, it had been confirmed that a total of nine tracks had been written and recorded for the album. One of the songs off the album was written to promote were first fragrance, Black Star. The album is expected to be largely acoustic. The release date for Goodbye Lullaby is set to take place on March 8, 2011. The lead single, "What The Hell" was released to fans on Lavigne's Facebook site January 1, 2011.
